The sanctuary is a famous pilgrimage site. The chapel of San Andrés is a famous sanctuary where, according to the popular saying vai de morto quen non foi de vivo (‘it is dead who was not alive)’. The pilgrims had the habit of throwing a stone in the burial mounds or 'milladoiros' that were on both sides of the road. The stones of the milladoiros says the legend that 'they will speak in the Last Judgment' to say which souls fulfilled the promise to go to San Andrés. The first record of the existence of pilgrimage appears in the year 1391, in the will of a lady of Vivero.
