The fortress of Rocca Maggiore has dominated the skies of Assisi at least since the 12th century, when it was built, most likely, on the remains of a previous fortification. After having been assaulted and rebuilt on numerous occasions over the centuries, increasing and reinforcing both the structure and its towers and bastions, it was devastated during the struggles that led to the Italian Unification in 1859. It is currently open to visitors, who can enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of the Umbria and the city of Assisi below.
