The Old Bridge of Espalion was built around the 11th century and was dotted with various stalls as early as the 12th century. In the 15th century. it was included in the city's fortification system and had three towers before the last arch was replaced by a bridge-levie in 1588. These fortifications disappeared and the Old Bridge was rebuilt in the 13th century.
