33.- Monastery of Santa María in Valdediós
The monastery of Santa María is associated to the settlement of the Cistercian community in the 13th century next to the old high medieval building. It is organised around a church with a basilica ground plan. a pronounced crossing and three semi-circular stepped apses. The naves are separated by a series of pointed arches supported by cruciform pillars. with adjacent semi-columns that are finished with leafy and intertwined capitals. These naves are covered by a ribbed vault as well as the crossing. In the arms. the ribbed and barrelled vaults come together. meanwhile in the apses of the front. the barrelled vault and the quarter sphere are used. It could be accessed by four entrances. On the inside. the building preserves interesting altarpieces and imagery from the 17th and 18th centuries. as well as the paintings on the sacristy that also date from the 18th century. The cloister of the monastery. adjoined to the southern façade of the church. presents a slightly rectangular ground plan and is structured in three floors. which all have Tuscan columns. The ground floor. which was built during the first half of the 16th century. preserves a semi-circular arcade. Basket arches are used on the first floor. which was built at the end of the 16th century. The third floor presents stony entablature.
