The church. which is located in the historical centre of Betanzos. constitutes one of the best examples of the Franciscan mendicant Gothic style. which corresponds to the second half of the . The church was built thanks to the patronage of . the feudal lord of the region. who rebuilt the thirteenth century monastery which had previously existed on that site. It stands out for its funerary character. as it became the pantheon where the remains of the church’s founder and those of his lineage would rest. In fact. the extensive collection of the of several members of the Andrade family (from the 14th. 15th and 16th centuries) constitute the most interesting historical-artistic element of the temple. The most interesting. without a doubt. is that of Fernán Pérez himself. considered as a precedent of medieval funeral sculpture. This sarcophagus is raised from the ground on sculptures acting as plinths which represent the emblematic animals of the Andrades: the and the . In the head and at the foot of the sarcophagus. this noble family’s coat of arms can be observed. and. on the sides. bas-reliefs with various boar hunting scenes.
It has a Latin cross ground plan and a single nave with transversal arches. The chancel has a polygonal ground plan with abacus ribbed vault cover. The main door of the church. which is pointed. is ornamented with archivolts decorated with plant and geometric motifs. The main cover represents the Adoration of the Kings. and along the outside of the church gothic and are distributed. as well as figured . At the top of the roof of one of the sides of the church we can see a cross held by a boar.
Inside. within the main chapel. there is a relief which represents God surrounded by the four evangelists. On the ribs of the vault. there are angels playing different instruments. and among them one playing the . You can also observe various with fantastic animals.
