25.- Historic town of Ribadesella
Capital of the council of the same name. it is located at the mouth of the Sella river. The traditional core is located on the right bank of the river. neighbourhoods on the other bank having developed since the late 19th century. next to the long beach of Santa Marina. The urban centre is officially established in 1270 with the municipal charter granted by the king Alfonso X. It had a port and no walls. and the current streets of Guillermo González and Oscura were the centre of the population. In the 16th century the fear of maritime incursions led to the fortification of Cerro de Guía.
Ribadesella's relation with the Way of Saint James dates back to at least the 15th century. and in 1486 the existence of a pilgrim hospital under the patronage of San Sebastián was documented. In the 16th century it was renamed San Roque.
