Church of Santa Maria Maggiore
From the early Christian period up to the eleventh century. Santa Maria Maggiore was the Cathedral of the city. The façade is from the twelfth century while the apse is from the thirteenth century. The early Christian basilica was rebuilt shortly before the eleventh century. the same period in which the crypt under the presbitery was built.
The interior has three naves and is divided by rectangular pillars. with remains of frescoes from the fourteenth and fifteenth century.
The crypt is from the IX – X century and has access to the remains of a Roman house (called the Domus di Properzio). Alongside there is the Bishop’s palace. with paintings of Giorgetti and Provvidoni.
