The Naval Museum of Ferrol was inaugurated in 1986 with the intention of showing the connection between Spanish Navy and the departmental city since. in 1726. José Patiño Rosales. Admiral. Secretary of State and General Intendant of the Navy during the reign of Felipe V. chose the Ferrol estuary and the A Graña site to build the Navy's arsenal on the northern coast.
The museum is located within the current naval base of Ferrol. specifically. in the historic building. belonging to the Ferrol Arsenal. known as *Presidio San Campio*. which was built with a mixture of baroque and neoclassical styles. Lieutenant General Cosme Alvarez began to develop the project’s construction in 1747. by 1770 it was completed. It was an answer to Felipe V’s idea to improve the arsenals with the objective of reinforcing the kingdom's naval policy.
The museum has among its collection more than 2.650 pieces related to the activity of the Navy and its close relationship with the city of Ferrol as well as the naval and maritime history of Spain. The external part boasts an extensive collection of anchors. considered one of the best in the world. Among the models conserved in its rooms is the 34-gun frigate Santa María Magdalena. launched in 1773 in Ferrol. A strong storm caused its collapse in the Viveiro estuary. along with the brig Palomo. More than 500 men lost their lives in the wreck. Some parts of the hull (which is currently being restored). as well as numerous objects. nautical instruments and weapons rescued from its wreck. are exhibited today in the museum's galleries. Other models of great interest are the training ship Galatea and the ship San Carlos Real de España. In addition. it possesses a wide collection of models of fishing vessels and cabotage.
In the Weapons room. all the elements that formed the Fire Direction of a ship in the second third of the 20th century. as well as torpedoes and other pieces of artillery are exposed. The nautical instruments used by the navigator in their voyages are also exhibited. Among the cartography collection. Tofino's Maritime Atlas of Spain and the collection of copper plates from the Hydrographic Institute of the 18th and 19th centuries deserve special attention.
Gallery 2 is worth noting. with a tour of Navy ships which sailed the seas between the 15th and 18th centuries. In this room. with the *El Galeón de Manila* (the commercial route between the Philippines. Mexico and Spain) in mind. there are several different representative pieces of the time exhibited. with special mention to the between-deck belonging to the ship Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza (real scale). The gallery is complemented by the ships which discovered America. the San Juan Nepomuceno. part of the wreck of the galleon San Gerónimo and an artillery piece of the frigate Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes. as well as a sample of thematic paintings.
