The Oseira Monastery is known by the name of El Escorial Gallego or the Galician El Escorial. which may give the visitor an idea of its grandeur. It began to be built during the second half of the 12th century. The church. which possesses Gothic and Baroque elements. is the most important element of this monumental complex. The Renaissance contribution can be seen in the sacristy. in the Bishop's Staircase and in the Courtyard of the Pinnacles. The patios of the Knights and Medallions are of a Baroque style. as well as the Grand Staircase of Honour whose steps possess a very striking decoration. The monastery consists of three cloisters: the one of the Portería. the Procesional and the one of the Pináculos. the biggest of the three. The most remarkable is the Chapter House. which was built in the 15th century of a late Gothic style. which surprises with its *twisted* columns. In addition. the Monastery has an active Pilgrim Hostel and a Monastic Hospice.
