Bishop Gotescalc. after his pilgrimage in 951 to Santiago de Compostela. was the originator of the founding of the Chapel of St. Michael (Xié). The church. built of volcanic stone. has a portal decorated with a polylobed arch. characteristic of the Umayyad architecture of the caliphate of Cordoba8 which spread in French Romanesque architecture through the influence of pilgrims. along the main French roads of the Pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela and. in particular. along the Via Podiensis which passes through Aiguilhe.
The door is framed by two columns topped each by a capital carved with acanth leaves and an anthropomorphic or zoomorphic motif. It is surmounted by a sculpted lint adorned with two facing mermaids. which supports an eardrum bordered by a frieze of rinsings. On this frieze rests the three-lobed arch. adorned with rinsings and anthropomorphic motifs. The interior of the lobes is decorated with sculpted scenes. including the Easter lamb.
Above the arch is a decoration of mosaics of polychrome stones topped with arches under which is represented Christ surrounded by Saint John. the Virgin. the archangel Michael and St. Peter.'
